The VPP comes first because it anchors everything that follows.
What Is a VPP?
Your VPP isn’t a surface-level problem — it’s the gut-level tension your audience feels.
It’s the thing they haven’t been able to name, the frustration they’ve normalised, or the issue they’ve decided they’re just stuck with now.
It’s the pain that shows up:
in late-night emails
in offhand comments at the end of meetings
in quiet conversations when the filter finally drops
If someone could name this pain accurately — and help resolve it — it would create disproportionate value.
Avoid Generic Problems
Most people stop at broad, generic pain points:
“low productivity”
“rising costs”
“poor culture”
“lack of innovation”
These are too broad to land. Anyone could say them. They don’t feel personal.
Instead, ask:
What is it about rising costs that’s creating pressure?
What is it about culture that’s breaking trust or burning people out?
What is it about lack of innovation that makes them feel exposed, behind, or boxed in?
Your job is to go deeper.
The Test: Seen vs. Surveyed
A strong VPP makes your audience feel:
“That’s not just a problem — that’s my problem. And no one’s ever put it like that before.”
A weak VPP sounds like market research.
A strong one feels intimate, specific, and true.
Your Homework
Your task now is to define one visceral pain your audience is experiencing.
Write it in clear, human language
Keep it visible
Refine it as you learn more
Your first version may not be perfect — that’s expected.
As you gather insight and confidence, you’ll sharpen it.
Final Instruction
Spend time getting your VPP right.
See the pain others haven’t seen.
Name it clearly.
Reframe it so it finally feels relevant and undeniable.
This is the foundation of everything you’ll build next.
